Security issues obviously get a lot of attention, but there are other issues like the fact that not all plugins continue to be supported long term.\u00a0One measure of how many plugins continue to be supported is to look at when plugins were last updated, as even plugins that have not needed any changes should have been updated periodically to indicate that they are compatible with new versions of WordPress.\u00a0On the WordPress.org\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/\">Plugin Directory<\/a>, plugins that have not been updated in over two years have a banner at the top of the page that states \u201cThis plugin\u00a0<strong>hasn\u2019t been updated in over 2 years<\/strong>. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitefirdesign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/plugin-directory-2-year-warning.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whitefirdesign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/plugin-directory-2-year-warning.png\" alt=\"Warning shown in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory when plugin hasn't been updated in over two years.\" width=\"952\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.whitefirdesign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/plugin-directory-2-year-warning.png 952w, https:\/\/www.whitefirdesign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/plugin-directory-2-year-warning-300x154.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year, following a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/support\/topic\/feature-request-no-longer-updated\">suggestion<\/a> for our <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/no-longer-in-directory\/\">No Longer in Directory plugin<\/a>,\u00a0we added the functionality to list installed plugins that had not been updated in over two years in addition to its listing of plugins that have been removed from the Plugin Directory. We also put up a post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitefirdesign.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/10\/30-percent-of-wordpress-plugins-havent-been-updated-by-their-developers-in-over-two-years\/\">looking at how many plugins that met that criteria at the time<\/a>. Now, a\u00a0little over year later we thought it would be a good time see again how many plugins haven&#8217;t been updated in over two years.<\/p>\n<p>As of earlier\u00a0today\u00a0a total of 16,935 listed plugins\u00a0had not been updated in over two years. That is 44.7 percent of all 37,905 of listed plugins. (Last year&#8217;s percentage\u00a0isn&#8217;t equivalent since we included all plugins that\u00a0entries in the Subversion Repository for the Plugin Directory, even if the plugin wasn&#8217;t currently or possibly ever in the Plugin Directory.)<\/p>\n<p>Below we have charted what year these plugins were last updated.
